La forma affermativa si costruisce con il soggetto seguito dal ausiliare to have al passato (had), il participio passato di to be (been) e il participio passato del verbo principale: I had been called, you had been called, he/she/it had been called, we had been called, you had been called, they had been called (io ero stato chiamato, tu eri stato chiamato, era stato chiamato, eravamo stati chiamati, eravate stati chiamati, erano stati chiamati).
La forma negativa si costruisce con la negazione dopo il verbo ausiliare to have (had not o in contrazione hadn't): I hadn't been called, you hadn't been called, he/she/it hadn't been called, we hadn't been called, you hadn't been called, they hadn't been called (non ero stato chiamato, non eri stato chiamato, non era stato chiamato, non eravamo stati chiamati, non eravate stati chiamati, non erano stati chiamati).
Infine, la forma interrogativa si ottiene con l'anticipazione del verbo ausiliare to have prima del soggetto: had I been called? had you been called? had he/she/it been called? had we been called? had you been called? had they been called?

Alcuni esempi: I had been called 2 times (Ero stato chiamato due volte); had she been paid yet? (era già stata pagata?).
